Jaipur: Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has fast-tracked plans to build two key underpasses after consultations with traffic stakeholders and Jaipur Metro officials, aiming to ease pressure expected from upcoming road and metro projects in the city. The decision was taken following a recent meeting with all traffic stakeholders and the metro officials. The first underpass, on Sardar Patel Marg in C Scheme, is scheduled to begin construction in Dec. Work on the second, at Gopalpura crossing on Tonk Road, is expected to start in the first quarter of next year.

Officials said both projects are being advanced together to avoid severe congestion once allied infrastructure becomes operational.A JDA engineer said traffic studies have warned of a sharp rise in vehicle movement after Civil Lines railway overbridge opens and the elevated road on Gopalpura Bypass Road progresses.“The Civil Lines RoB will open for traffic by Dec, while the elevated road on Gopalpura Bypass Road has a 2028 deadline. We are already running late for the Sardar Patel Marg project. We do not want to take any chances and will start both projects simultaneously,” the engineer said.Sardar Patel Marg underpass will run about 400 metres on either side of Rajmahal Hotel crossing. JDA expects heavy traffic from Chomu House crossing, including vehicles turning right to access the new RoB. The underpass is designed to provide smoother movement for traffic travelling between Bais Godam and Chomu House. At Gopalpura, Tonk Road underpass is intended to handle future traffic between OTS crossing on JLN Marg and Gurjar Ki Thadi on New Sanganer Road after the elevated corridor on Gopalpura Bypass Road is built.Metro officials said coordination is crucial because Tonk Road underpass falls directly on the under-construction metro corridor, while Sardar Patel Marg site is close to the proposed Govt Hostel Metro station.“Since the metro project will take years, JDA has been allowed to work in patches. Building both systems together will help manage congestion during construction,” a metro official said.
