Jaisalmer: The Indian Air Force has provided Rs 27.16 lakh in compensation for damage to the Bhil Samaj Hostel and Meghwal Samaj Hostel in Jaisalmer after a fighter aircraft crashed during a rehearsal for the Vayu Shakti-2024 exercise in March 2024.Based on proposals submitted by the district administration following an assessment of the damage, Jaisalmer District Collector Anupama Jorwal and Air Force Station Jaisalmer Station Commander Air Commodore Mahendra Singh handed over the compensation cheques at the District Collectorate auditorium Thursday.A cheque of Rs 25.16 lakh was handed over to Dhararam Bhil, president of the Bhil District Development Committee, for damage to the hall and store of the Bhil Samaj Hostel. Another cheque of Rs 2 lakh was handed over to Rawataram, treasurer of the Meghwal Development Committee, for damage to the boundary wall of the Meghwal Samaj Hostel.Air Commodore Mahendra Singh said the compensation had been sanctioned based on proposals submitted by the district administration for damage caused to the two hostels in the crash.The fighter aircraft crashed on March 12, 2024, during a rehearsal for the IAF’s Vayu Shakti-2024 exercise. Following a technical malfunction, the aircraft crashed near Jawahar Nagar Colony and fell on the Bhil Samaj Hostel after catching fire.No one was present at the hostel at the time, averting a major tragedy. The nearby Meghwal Samaj Hostel also suffered damage.
