Demolition before court verdict risks another Jaipur road-widening fiasco

Jaipur: The proposed widening of New Sanganer Road is threatening to follow a familiar Jaipur script: demolitions carried out in haste, litigation halting the remaining work, and a promised wider road never materialising. The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has asked residents and traders to clear affected portions by Saturday, even as two petitions by aggrieved parties are listed for hearing before Supreme Court Monday and Rajasthan High Court Tuesday. Four local property owners have already obtained protection from JDA tribunal, creating a practical roadblock for the agency if it proceeds with demolition Sunday.A section of JDA officials said that under the rules, the tribunal’s stay applies only to the petitioners and does not automatically shield other residents or traders.“Yet that limited protection could be enough to derail the project. If most structures are razed while the four protected ones remain, the stretch may neither be widened nor restored, leaving residents with losses and commuters with no improvement,” an official added.Officials acknowledged that this pattern has played out before. On Lt Gen Sagat Singh Marg in Khatipura and Bhrigu Path in Jagatpura, several property owners lost parts of their buildings, while court stays protected a few structures. As a result, neither stretch has been fully widened, turning the demolition drives into exercises in avoidable damage. On May 26, 2025, JDA demolished structures between Jharkhand Mod and Khatipura Tiraha on Lt Gen Sagat Singh Marg for a proposed 160-foot road. On June 8, authorities suspended internet services during demolition on Bhrigu Path, where structures including Noorani Masjid were removed for an 80-foot road. Neither project has delivered the intended carriageway.“The New Sanganer Road action appears headed in the same direction. In Oct 2025, residents obtained stays before JDA could act on Gandhi Path West, Vaishali Marg, Amrapali Marg and Queen’s Road. JDA should wait for directives from the two courts. The warning is clear: resolve litigation before swinging hammers,” stated Jitendra Sharma, councillor of Ward 93.
