Court orders case against woman officer, parents in dowry demand case

Jaipur: A lower court in the city has directed the Pratap Nagar police to register a case against a woman Air Force officer and her parents for allegedly demanding Rs 5 crore and a luxury car as dowry from her husband. The court order came following a complaint filed by a Merchant Navy professional residing in Jagatpura. According to his lawyer, Advocate Sandesh Khandelwal, the couple married on Feb 10, 2022. The woman, a senior Air Force officer, was previously widowed when her first husband, also an Air Force officer, died in a plane accident in 2014.The complainant alleges that post-marriage, his wife’s behaviour changed dramatically. While stationed in Chennai, she allegedly became increasingly hostile. The situation worsened after her transfer to Jaipur, where her family allegedly pressured the complainant to purchase a luxury car, citing her senior position in the Air Force. The couple, who welcomed a child on June 26, 2023, are now living separately by mutual consent. The complaint states that on March 19, his wife and father-in-law demanded Rs 5 crore and a BMW car, threatening to prevent him from meeting his son if the demands weren’t met.Presiding Officer Khetpal Singh Charan has instructed the police to register the case under relevant sections of the IPC and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 says if any person demands, directly or indirectly, from the parents or other relatives or guardian of a bride or bridegroom, as the case may be, any dowry, he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months, but which may extend to two years and with fine which may extend to Rs 10,000.The court has also sought a detailed investigation report on the matter.
