Jaipur: A 47-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting incident while attempting to prevent a burglary in the city’s Kardhani area police station area during the early hours of Friday morning.Bhagwat Singh sustained a gunshot wound to his left arm after confronting a burglar who was attempting to break into a vacant house in his neighbourhood in Lal Chand Pura, a developing residential area on the city’s outskirts. The incident occurred around 2am when Singh, who was on his house terrace, noticed suspicious activity at his neighbour’s property. According to police officials, Singh armed himself with a stick and pursued the intruder as the latter attempted to flee the scene on being spotted. A dramatic chase began that lasted approximately 500 meters. The burglar, armed with a country-made pistol, didn’t hesitate to use deadly force when confronted, firing three shots in total. While the first two missed their target, the third shot struck Singh’s arm at close range after he had managed to hit the intruder with his stick.Local residents and Singh’s family members, alerted by the gunfire, immediately contacted the police. A patrol team promptly arrived at the scene and transported Singh to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment in the ICU. Hospital sources report his condition as stable, though his arm has sustained severe injury. Police investigators believe the perpetrator used a crude country-made pistol, commonly known as a “desi katta.” The targeted property belongs to one Ram Singh, who was away with his family at the time of the incident.“The area’s developing nature, with its sparse housing and open spaces, might have made it an attractive target for the burglar,” explained an officer from the Kardhani police station. “This incident shows how criminals are operating without any fear of law enforcement. They’re not just stealing any more; they’re ready to kill,” said a local.Police have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the suspect, who managed to escape after the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
