Jhunjhunu: In a political upset in the Khetri Municipality chairperson election, Geeta Saini was elected unopposed after she quit Congress and joined BJP minutes before the nominations closed Wednesday. BJP named her as its candidate, and with no rival nomination filed, she was declared elected.Saini had won ward No 5 as a Congress councillor and was also the outgoing municipal chairperson. Her switch came shortly before 3 pm, after which she filed her nomination as BJP candidate.Saini publicly expressed her gratitude towards MLA Engineer Dharmapal Gurjar, attributing her decision to join the BJP to the impactful work he has accomplished in Khetri over the past two years.Khetri Municipality has 25 wards, with eight BJP, four Congress and 13 independent councillors elected in the recent polls. Saini’s defection altered the chairperson race decisively, leaving Congress with three councillors.
