Jaipur: BJP has begun moving its candidates to camps at different locations across Rajasthan after polling for the second phase of urban local body elections ended, in a bid to keep them together ahead of result day and elections for chairpersons and vice-chairpersons.In Jaipur, BJP municipal corporation candidates were asked to report at the party’s city headquarters at noon Saturday with essential belongings. They are expected to be taken to a private hotel. The party has described the exercise as a “training class” and denied that it amounts to confinement.

BJP state president Madan Rathore said the candidates were being kept together for training by senior leaders to prepare them for their responsibilities and help them understand how to work for the public.The move is aimed at preventing changes in the party’s numbers after results, particularly through cross-voting or political realignments during formation of local bodies.

BJP has shifted candidates in several other cities. A party source said 79 candidates from Ajmer had been taken to a hotel in Pushkar, while Kota candidates were taken on a trip. Women candidates were accompanied by their husbands and children as part of the arrangements.“In Jodhpur, BJP district president Rajendra Paliwal hosted a dinner for the candidates after polling Friday. They were later taken by buses to three different locations. The party plans to keep the winning candidates at the camp until the mayoral election on Sept 21, while those who lose are expected to return after counting on Sept 14,” the source said.

BJP has also included some independent candidates in its arrangements at certain places. In one such instance, three to four independents considered important for board formation were taken along with BJP candidates.Rathore rejected the description of the exercise as confinement. “BJP did not follow the practice of keeping elected representatives confined in hotels. The practice is common with Congress, as everyone knows what happened in its last tenure,” he said.A party source said the exercise was aimed at preparing candidates for the next stage of the civic elections, particularly formation of boards and election of their heads.
