Jaisalmer: Indian Army tested the Igla-S man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) atMahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner, showcasing its ability to counter low-level aerial threats and rapidly deploy air-defence assets in forward areas. The system was displayed mounted on Mahindra ALSV (Armado) during an operational preparedness review by Lt Gen Mohit Malhotra, Army Commander, Sapta Shakti Command. The integration of the missile system with a mobile protected vehicle platform is aimed at providing greater flexibility for deploying air-defence elements alongside forward formations.Malhotra reviewed operational preparedness in forward areas and interacted with troops deployed on the ground. He commended their readiness and stressed the need to continuously evolve warfighting concepts, accelerate technology absorption and strengthen combat capabilities.Igla-S is a shoulder-fired, fire-and-forget air-defence missile system designed to engage low-flying aerial targets, including aircraft, helicopters and drones. It forms part of Army’s Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) capability and provides close-range protection against aerial threats. The system’s role has gained importance with the increasing use of unmanned aerial systems in modern warfare. Its field testing at Mahajan also highlighted Army’s focus on validating weapon systems under operational conditions and integrating them with mobile platforms for rapid movement and deployment.Armado, based on the Mahindra ALSV platform, is designed to provide protected mobility for personnel and equipment. Its integration with Igla-S reflects Army’s emphasis on mobility and quick reaction for air-defence units operating with forward formations.During the review, Malhotra emphasised technology integration and capability enhancement to meet changing battlefield requirements.
