Jaipur: Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said Wednesday that it was the country’s misfortune that despite Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel doing so much for the nation, he was forgotten by the Congress. Sharma said attempts were made by Congress to erase Patel’s contributions from the pages of independent India’s history.Speaking at ‘Yamuna Pravah Yatra’ as part of the ‘Sardar@150 Unity March’ at Amar Jawan Jyoti here, Sharma said, “Sardar Patel was not given the respect he deserved. Only one family’s contribution (referring to the Nehru-Gandhi family) to the country’s independence was praised.”“Patel made invaluable contributions to the freedom movement. He taught farmers to fight for their rights. He went to jail but he never compromised with his principles,” Sharma said.Sharma said it was Patel who made 562 princely states accede to the Union of India. “Patel started merging each princely state into India using his diplomacy, foresight, and, sometimes, strictness. Patel integrated Hyderabad into India by launching Operation Polo and Junagadh through a plebiscite. He made India’s unity and integrity his biggest goal and accomplished it,” Sharma said.
