Jaipur: A Pune-based man has been arrested from Thane for allegedly providing a company bank account that was used to siphon off Rs 50 lakh from a Jaipur-based doctor couple, who was duped out of a total of Rs 76 lakh in a ‘digital arrest’ fraud, city police said.Kiran Laxman Tamhane was brought to Jaipur on a transit warrant Friday. Four people have now been arrested in the case so far.Police said Rs 50 lakh belonging to the doctor couple was transferred to the account of a firm linked to Tamhane, before being moved to other accounts. Tamhane allegedly gave two other accused in the case the company’s bank details, net banking credentials, cheque book and a SIM card in return for promised commissions. The fraudsters behind the digital arrest had posed as police and NIA officers, accusing the couple of links to terrorism and money laundering. They sent a notice bearing forged NIA credentials and threatened arrest, eventually persuading the couple to liquidate their savings and transfer Rs 76 lakh to several accounts. The money trail led investigators to Tamhane after three other accused were arrested in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on Oct 12 and Oct 13. Police are tracing the remaining money and looking for other members of the network. The arrest coincided with a statewide cybercrime crackdown launched on the directions of DGP Rajeev Kumar Sharma.
