Jaipur: A probe began in Jaipur Friday into claims that a cybercrime group had breached Rajasthan Police systems and offered allegedly stolen data for sale. The claims’ authenticity and the extent of any data exposure remain unverified.DIG (Cyber Crime) Shantanu Kumar Singh said the CERT team was examining the matter to establish whether a breach had occurred. “We are looking into the matter, if indeed there was a hack or not,” an official said. The cybercrime group reportedly claimed to possess around 70,000 identity records and 59,460 mobile numbers, along with documents linked to FIRs, electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) records and witness statements. The alleged dataset also includes email addresses associated with police officials, though investigators have yet to establish its authenticity or origin. The claim surfaced on a cybercrime leak-monitoring platform that recorded a listing associated with Rajasthan Police. However, the appearance of data on such a platform does not, by itself, confirm that a system was hacked or that the material being offered is genuine.Investigators will need to examine the allegedly compromised material, relevant system logs and access records to determine whether police databases were accessed, what information may have been extracted and how any breach occurred. If verified, the exposure could put complainants’ and witnesses’ personal information at risk and potentially compromise sensitive investigations. The data could also be misused for impersonation, phishing and targeted fraud.Rajasthan Police has already directed personnel to change their passwords regularly and keep their phones and computers updated to reduce the risk of cyberattacks. The investigation is under way, and the full scope of the alleged breach remains unclear.
