Jaipur: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed medical colleges in Rajasthan to act promptly on ragging complaints and provide mental-health support to affected students after receiving eight complaints from the state in 10 days. The commission has instructed colleges to protect complainants’ confidentiality, as far as possible, and prevent retaliation, intimidation, isolation or pressure to withdraw complaints. It also directed institutions to address immediate safety concerns without waiting for inquiry reports to be completed. In a complaint involving Govt Medical College, Dausa, where students reported psychological distress, thoughts of self-harm or a risk of serious harm, NMC asked the college to arrange confidential assessment and support through qualified mental-health professionals. Institutions have also been asked to confirm that support measures have begun without unnecessarily disclosing sensitive medical information. In its letter to Dausa officials, NMC said, “Ensure that the complainant is protected from further contact, intimidation, threats, social boycott, or academic victimisation, as appropriate. Designate a responsible faculty member or nodal officer whom the student can contact confidentially. Ensure that no confrontation with the alleged perpetrators is forced upon the complainant.”Dr Rajendra Verma, principal of Govt Medical College, Dausa, said, “We have received the complaint and we will take the action accordingly. We will call a meeting of anti-ragging committee to find out the factual details. Those found guilty will be punished.”In a ragging complaint involving SN Medical College, Jodhpur, NMC sought details on whether anti-ragging helpline boards and grievance committees were functioning and prominently displayed in the college and hostels, as mandated by its public notice dated March 9, 2026. It also asked whether the Anti-Ragging Squad was conducting regular hostel inspections and what psychological counselling and safety assurances had been provided to the complainant. In a letter to Govt Medical College, Bhilwara, NMC noted that ragging complaints had been reported from the institution a few months ago and that it had earlier been advised to maintain zero tolerance. The commission said the latest complaint raised concerns over compliance with Supreme Court directions and NMC guidelines, as well as the functioning of the Anti-Ragging Committee, Anti-Ragging Squad and Hostel Committee. In the complaint concerning ESIC Medical College, Jaipur, NMC directed the authorities to ensure the immediate safety of the complainant and other affected students.
