Jaipur: North Western Railway (NWR) has moved a step closer to building five railway overbridges (RoBs) on the Jaipur-Phulera rail section, a project expected to ease congestion at some of Jaipur’s busiest level crossings. The proposed RoBs will come up at Gokulpura, Govindpura, Hathoj, Bindayaka and Sinwar, covering key crossings on the Kalwar Road and Sirsi Road corridors. These gates have long been traffic bottlenecks for commuters, residents, goods vehicles and emergency movement. An NWR spokesperson said the railway forwarded the general arrangement drawing (GAD) to Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) Thursday for approval. The move is aimed at ensuring that JDA engineers examine the plan and raise no objections once work begins.“After receiving JDA’s approval, we will float tenders and begin construction of the five RoBs,” the spokesperson said.JDA officials said the proposal will be assessed for feasibility, land ownership and possible acquisition requirements before clearance is granted.“The authority is working to process the approval quickly so NWR can start the project without delay,” stated a JDA official.Traffic officials said the five railway gates close around 40 times in a 24-hour period, affecting more than three lakh people every day. Each closure triggers long queues, slows local movement and often leads to severe jams during peak hours.“These RoBs have become essential as traffic volumes have risen sharply around these crossings. The structures are expected to reduce delays, improve road safety and ensure smoother train operations by removing conflict points between rail and road traffic,” a traffic official stated. The Gokulpura crossing has drawn particular attention due to damaged approach roads and haphazard parking of trucks and other vehicles on the Kalwar Road side, which has further worsened congestion near the railway phatak area.
