Jaipur: The state BJP is set to review its organisational performance across assembly constituencies following the urban local body election results, with a report to be sent to the party’s central leadership in Delhi.While BJP emerged as the single-largest party in the civic polls, the results also exposed pockets where it failed to secure a clear mandate, including several politically significant urban centres.BJP state president Madan Rathore has indicated that the party will review the performance in areas where its results were weak. “Depending on the assessment, local leaders and elected representatives could face advice or warnings, while further action may also be considered in cases where the party finds serious organisational shortcomings,” Rathore said.The results have given BJP both a victory tally and a set of questions to examine. Of the 309 urban local bodies, BJP secured clear majorities in four of the 10 municipal corporations, 12 of 47 municipal councils and around 70 of the 252 municipalities. In the 10,235 wards for which results were declared, BJP candidates won 4,179, against 3,613 for Congress and 2,273 for independents.A source said the party would assess its performance in assembly constituencies represented by its ministers, MLAs and senior leaders, particularly where the organisational structure was considered strong but the electoral outcome was weaker than expected.The review could cover candidate selection, the effectiveness of the local organisation, booth management, the role of rebels, coordination among local leaders and the participation of elected representatives in the campaign.“The performance of representatives in constituencies where the party performed poorly at the ward level will be examined. A report is also expected to be sent to the central leadership,” said a senior BJP functionary.BJP had mounted a broad campaign for the civic polls, with chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma holding roadshows and public meetings in several cities, while ministers and senior organisational leaders also campaigned. The weaker results in some areas therefore raise questions not only about individual candidates but also about the functioning of the wider election machinery.“The organisational review is likely to examine whether the party’s campaign translated into ward-level support and whether local leaders were able to work together effectively. The role of rebel candidates and Independents, particularly in closely contested bodies, is also expected to be assessed,” he added.Meanwhile, on Sunday, Rathore and Harish Dwivedi, who has been appointed as BJP’s Rajasthan civic election in charge, held a review meeting with divisional in-charges. The meeting also discussed preparations for the upcoming panchayat elections.
