Jaisalmer: Police Sunday arrested two men, including the grandson of an elderly couple, for allegedly strangling them to steal jewellery and cash in the Mohangarh police station area of Jaisalmer district.The victims, Lakharam (80) and his wife Reshma (78), members of the Bhil community and of Pakistani origin, were found dead at their home in Bhil Basti Saturday morning.SP Abhishek Shivhare said the case surfaced when a relative, Chandaram, visited the house and found Lakharam lying in the courtyard and Reshma inside a room. Police said the couple were smothered and strangled during the night. Lakharam’s gold locket and Reshma’s gold chain, earrings, silver anklets and cash were missing.A case was registered at Mohangarh police station and teams were formed under senior officers. The FSL, mobile forensic unit, dog squad and crime scene teams inspected the spot. Police also collected intelligence and technical evidence and coordinated with Kotwali police in Jaisalmer city.Police identified the accused as Suresh (19), the couple’s grandson, and Yogesh (24), a relative. Investigators said the two planned the crime due to financial distress. Suresh had earlier lived with the couple for six months and knew where they kept valuables.According to police, the two travelled from Jaisalmer, consumed alcohol on the way, and reached the house late at night. They allegedly killed Lakharam while he slept outside, then strangled Reshma inside the house before fleeing to Jaisalmer city. Kotwali police traced and arrested them within hours.Police said efforts were on to recover the stolen jewellery and cash, and further investigation was underway.
