Farmer’s huts, valuables gutted in fire

Jaisalmer: A fire broke out at a tubewell and engulfed three huts, near Chhod village in Jaisalmer district Friday.The blaze destroyed three huts belonging to nearby farmer Kishanaram. Approximately Rs 6.50 lakh in cash and 15-20 tola of gold belonging Kishanaram were gutted in fire. The fire brigade doused the fire after about one hour.Witnesses said flames began rising from the huts Friday afternoon and quickly took on a massive form. A gas cylinder kept inside one hut also caught fire, intensifying the blaze. Kishanaram evacuated his children in time, averting a major tragedy.Kishanaram said his daughter, who lives in Pune, Maharashtra, arrived two days earlier with her children to visit him, but the fire turned the visit into grief. He stated that around Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery kept with his daughter also burned. He said he lost Rs 5 lakh in cash and about 15 to 20 tola of gold, while grain, clothes and goods worth lakhs stored in the house were destroyed.
