Dungarpur MLA alleges cops demand money for FIRs

Jaipur: Allegations of corruption against police in Dungarpur district triggered sharp exchanges in Rajasthan Assembly Monday after Congress’s Dungarpur MLA Ganesh Ghogra accused the district police of demanding money from people to register FIRs.“In police stations, people have to pay Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 to get an FIR registered. Only after taking money are cases being registered,” he said.Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ghogra alleged, “Ever since the double-engine govt came to power, the police are looting common people. In Ramsankda police station, an SI is implicating people in false cases.” Ghogra also alleged that a majority of traffic challans in the area were issued to poor tribal residents, and claimed that liquor smuggling to Gujarat was taking place from the Bichhiwara police station area. He also claimed that people were being framed in cases related to alleged assaults on children, and that residents approached him after failing to get relief from police. Dismissing the allegations, minister of state for home Jawahar Singh Bedam said, “It is wrong to say that police are looting people under the double-engine govt. Due to strict policing in Dungarpur, crime reduced by 16%.” The remarks led to a brief exchange between Bedam and Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra. Supporting Ghogra, Dotasra said the MLA’s concerns were valid.Bedam, however, insisted, “The figures speak for themselves. Crime decreased due to strict policing.”
