Walled City traders, residents get JMC’s tips on conservation

Jaipur: Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) Tuesday hosted a high-level workshop to sensitise stakeholders, including residents and traders, on the importance of preserving the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) criteria for the Jaipur Walled City, a UNESCO world heritage site.Officials stated that traders of the Vyapar Mandals were recognised as the vital heart of the Walled City. During the workshop, members of the heritage cell of JMC held dialogues with them, addressing the friction between historic preservation and modern infrastructure needs.“We decoded the two regulatory frameworks – Jaipur Building Byelaws-2020 and the 2022 Regulations and tried to explain to them the importance of maintaining these essential operational tools for heritage area,” an official stated.Besides residents, traders from the historic markets of Tripoliya, Johari Bazar, Kishanpol, Chandpol, Ghatgate, Naharghar Road, Maniharo Ka Rasta, MI road, Bapu Bazar and Indra Bazar were present at the meeting.Assistant Town Planners Akash Kumawat and Dheeraj Kumar utilised graphical presentations to translate complex statutes into clear architectural guidelines.“These visuals were critical in easing public understanding of specific controls on a few important aspects – the maintenance of uniform street facades and continuous verandahs, the mandatory use of traditional materials such as lime and stone, and the preservation of defining elements like chajjas (sunshades), modular arches, and delicate lattice screens,” the official added.
