Jaipur: The prices of vegetables increased Sunday, the third time in Aug, in Jaipur. Wholesale dealers attributed the surge to the disrupted supply caused by heavy rainfall and damage to the vegetable crops coming from local farms. The impact of the surge is felt at the Muhana mandi where wholesalers are not getting the required quantity of vegetables from the farmers. Traders have reported a sharp decline in the arrival of vegetables like tomatoes, bottle gourd, onions, and green chilies. Torrential rains in major supplying regions have damaged crops and delayed transportation. “Prices of vegetables are almost three times what they were in July,” said Sangita Agarwal, a customer at a retail store. “Due to reduced supply during the rainy season and crop damage, vegetable prices are continuously increasing. This has also affected the supply from other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab,” said Abdul Sagar, a wholesale dealer of vegetables at Muhana mandi.Worst affected are the tomatoes, as their supply has been badly affected. “We were getting almost 50 trucks of tomatoes every day, which has now reduced to 15 to 20 trucks. The tomatoes are going to be costlier in the coming days,” said Ramesh Saini, another wholesale dealer at the Muhana mandi. The prices of tomatoes, which were Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg in July, are now available at Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg. Similarly, the crunched supply of green chilies, bottle gourd, and other vegetables from Madhya Pradesh due to heavy rainfall has also increased their prices.
