Jaipur: Driven by bumper local harvests, vegetable prices across the city maintained their downward trend over the weekend, with most varieties selling below Rs 40 per kg to the relief of consumers. Heavy arrivals of fresh produce from nearby farm belts boosted supply in wholesale and retail markets, leading to a natural correction in prices.Seasonal vegetables such as potatoes, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, and leafy greens are reaching markets in large volumes. Traders also noted an improvement in the quality of most varieties due to fresh local harvests.Wholesale dealers said the downward spiral in vegetable prices is likely to continue in the near term, significantly easing household expenses on groceries this winter.Traders at Muhana Mandi, one of Jaipur’s largest wholesale markets, attributed the fall in prices to favourable crop conditions and increased seasonal supply. “Prices dropped sharply as bulk arrivals from nearby agricultural clusters started coming in large volumes from the beginning of this month,” said Shiv Shankar Sharma, president of the Aaloo Adhatiya Sangh.“Green peas, which were selling for Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg in Nov, are now available at Rs 25 to Rs 30 in the retail market. Prices of tomatoes, potatoes, onions, brinjal and several other vegetables have similarly declined after Dec 15 with the end of the marriage season,” said Abdul Sagir, a wholesale vegetable trader at Muhana Mandi.Tomato prices have also softened and now range from Rs 30 to Rs 50 per kg, based on the variety, compared to Rs 60 to Rs 80 per kg just last month. Key winter staples, ginger and garlic, also witnessed a notable decline in prices. “Ginger is currently selling at Rs 60 to Rs 80 per kg, down from Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg last month,” said Sitaram Saini, another wholesale vegetable dealer. Jaipur’s vegetable markets are primarily supplied by local farms in Bagru, Bassi, Tunga, Hathoj, Chomu and Dudu.
