Jaipur: Pensioners and employees from all govt universities across Rajasthan staged a protest at the Shaheed Smarak police commissionerate premises Tuesday. The demonstration was organised under the banner of Federation of the Pensioners of the State Universities of Rajasthan and the Rajasthan University Pensioners’ Association. Employees and retired professors from across the state participated, with support from RUCTA, RUTA, the Academic Staff Association of Rajasthan University, Rajasthan University Retired Employees Association, and the All-University Non-Teaching Staff Association. The protesters demanded that, like college pensioners, university pensioners should also receive pensions directly through the state treasury. They highlighted the growing financial crisis faced by state-funded universities, which made timely pension payments increasingly difficult. Speakers at the protest explained that pension payments in the state-funded universities were initiated under govt orders in 1990. Since then, universities funded pensions from their own revenue. However, with declining financial resources and reduced student fees in newly established universities, universities are now struggling to meet pension obligations. At present, there are around 8,000 pensioners across Rajasthan’s state-funded universities, an annual pension expenditure of only Rs 550 crore, a mere 2% of the total pension outlay.
