Tenant opens fire in Ajmer rent dispute, 16-year-old injured

Ajmer: A tenant allegedly opened fire during a rent dispute in Ajmer’s Phus Ki Kothi area Wednesday evening, injuring a 16-year-old student, police said.The accused, identified as Gulrez Chishti, was taken into custody after the incident in Kundan Nagar. Police said the firing followed a clash between the tenant and the house owner’s side.Station in-charge Shambhu Singh said police received information that a student had been shot during firing in the area and rushed to the spot. Police said Chishti was carrying a country-made pistol and that a bullet struck the hand of a 16-year-old boy from the locality. The injured student was taken to hospital for primary treatment.The entire incident was captured on CCTV footage, which shows both sides fighting before the accused is seen firing. As shots were fired, people ran for cover, though the accused allegedly continued shooting.During preliminary questioning, police said it emerged that Chishti had a dispute with the house owner over rent. Investigators said people present at the scene then gathered and assaulted him.House owner Aaisha told police that the tenant was burning amulets at the house and became abusive when stopped. She alleged that when her son objected, Chishti began fighting and came out of his room with an iron rod.“During the fight, the accused pulled out a gun. The accused tenant wanted to shoot me, but the bullet hit a child from the area who was trying to intervene,” she said.Chishti, in his statement to police, said, “I was living on rent for 5 months. The house owner’s wife was picking fights daily, about which I had also complained. Today, the woman, along with several people, attacked me, due to which I sustained an injury on my ear.”
