Jaisalmer: A pack of stray dogs killed three chinkara deer, a Schedule I protected species, near Gangaram Ki Dhani in the Lathi area of Jaisalmer district Friday.As the news of death of deer spread, wildlife enthusiasts Abhishek Vishnoi, Mahendra Bishnoi, and Pankaj Bishnoi, along with several villagers, reached the site, recovered the carcasses, and performed the last rites as per Bishnoi tradition.According to officials, a herd of deer was roaming in Lathi area in the evening when they got trapped in the clutches of the dogs and died on the spot.Villagers said the number of stray dogs in the area has increased sharply over the past few months, leading to terror of dogs and daily attacks on deer. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, the forest department had taken no strict measures.On being informed, Pokaran circle officer Bhawani Singh, assistant sub-inspector Kishansingh Bhati, assistant sub-inspector Padamchand Goyal, and from the Lathi forest department, regional forest officer Jagmalsingh Solanki, forest guards Ramesh Kumar and Bhanwarlal Vishnoi, along with police and forest department teams, reached the spot, inspected the site and initiated necessary action.
