SMS neurosurgery HoD sent to prison

Jaipur: A day after the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Dr Manish Agrawal, head of the neurosurgery department and additional principal of SMS Medical College, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, he was sent to judicial custody on Friday. The arrest followed a complaint that Dr Agrawal demanded money from a supplier of brain coils used in neurosurgical procedures in exchange for approving pending bills. “The company submitted bills worth Rs 12 lakh for supplies made over the past two years. The file reached Dr Agrawal’s desk, but he repeatedly delayed signing it,” an ACB official said. The operation was led by Additional SP Sandeep Saraswat, who verified the complaint and set up a trap. During the exchange, sources said, the accused taunted the complainant for delaying the payment. “He told the complainant they should have paid earlier instead of waiting so long,” an officer said. After receiving the bribe, the complainant left, and a head constable of the ACB later approached Agrawal’s residence posing as a patient’s attendant. “When the constable identified himself as being from the ACB, Dr Agrawal allegedly asked him to settle the matter. He then called his receptionist to handle the situation,” the official added. The ACB said Dr Agrawal is likely to be investigated for alleged misuse of official position under the Prevention of Corruption Act at a later stage.Sources confirmed that ACB sleuths will scrutinise procurement and billing records to determine if similar irregularities were committed in the past. “If found guilty of abusing his authority, additional sections will be invoked against him,” an official said.
