SMS hosp receives at least 200 injured due to firecrackers

Jaipur: Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital received at least 200 patients with burn injuries from bursting firecrackers. Most of the injured brought to the hospital were under 18 years.Three cases were of children whose fingers were severely damaged. In the burn and plastic surgery department, 89 patients attended the OPD, with 11 admitted. The ophthalmology OPD received 86 patients, with 22 admitted for eye burns. One entire ward of ophthalmology was full of such patients. The emergency unit at the main hospital building kept receiving such patients for three days, from Oct 19 to Oct 21.A senior hospital official said 22 patients were admitted with burn injuries in their eyes. “They were bursting firecrackers, but carelessness put their vision at risk. We have provided them immediate treatment, but in some cases, the damage is serious,” the official said.Among those whose fingers were damaged due to bursting firecrackers while holding them in hand were a 14-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old boy. The plastic surgery department admitted 11 such patients with severe burns and damaged fingers. A 15-year-old boy from Deeg in Bharatpur suffered severe burns to both eyes and was admitted. SMS Hospital had made arrangements for such burn injuries by deploying doctors of different specialties round the clock at the emergency unit.
