Jhunjhunu: A 19-year-old MBBS student slipped and fell into a pond in Jhunjhunu district on Friday while clicking a selfie. Her brother-in-law jumped into the water to save her, but both drowned.Shibu, from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, had recently cleared NEET and secured admission to an MBBS programme in Noida. She had accompanied her family on a picnic to Kadamb Kund in Chhapoli village near Udaipurwati, and had been capturing photos on her cellphone.Shibu was trying to click a selfie when she slipped off a rock’s edge and fell into the deep pond. Desperate to rescue her, Shibu’s brother-in-law, Krishna Kumar (28), dived into the water, only to meet with a similar fate. Udaipurwati SHO Kastur Verma said the accident occurred around 9.30am. Witnesses told police that Shibu’s brother, elder sister, and two cousins were present at the spot. There were no swimmers nearby to rescue the duo. The priest of a nearby temple alerted local authorities, who arrived and retrieved the bodies with help from community members.Police handed over the bodies to the bereaved kin after post-mortem. Just a day before the tragedy, the family had celebrated the naming ceremony for Kumar’s newborn niece, cops said. The ceremony was held in Neem Ka Thana in Sikar district on Thursday, after which the family went on a picnic on Friday, leading to the accident. Authorities conducted post-mortems and returned the bodies to the grieving family.
