Jaipur: Rajasthan’s school education department will begin suggesting ‘appropriate and meaningful’ names for children if their current names are considered likely to cause embarrassment later in life, education minister Madan Dilawar announced Wednesday.Speaking to the media, Dilawar said the department will launch the “Sarthak Naam Abhiyan” for students studying in govt schools across the state. Dilawar said the campaign is intended to prevent children from developing feelings of inferiority or embarrassment about their identity as they grow older. “Under this campaign, for students whose names do not have any meaning, like Kachumbar or Dhapa, and are kept by villagers in rural areas, discussions will be held with their parents to assign them meaningful names,” said Dilawar. The minister said the department will compile a list of 2,000-3,000 names from which suggestions will be made to parents. Under the initiative, officials will speak with parents of children whose names are seen as lacking meaning, particularly in rural areas, and recommend alternatives from a list of 2,000 to 3,000 names that the department will compile. The announcement came as Rajasthan’s govt school enrolment drive is underway. The minister said children from nomadic communities must be admitted even if they do not have documents, and no eligible child should be denied enrolment. To celebrate academic excellence in govt schools, Dilawar also announced that students achieving high marks in the 2026 board exams will be honoured at their respective schools. Their achievements will be highlighted across various media platforms, including banners and social media, to motivate parents to enroll their children in govt schools. In another first, an annual alumni meet will be held at govt schools across the state from this year. “The active cooperation of alumni will be sought for the holistic development of schools, including infrastructure upgrades and building construction, as alumni possess a deep emotional attachment to their alma mater,” said Dilawar. The minister further said all school principals have been instructed to inspect classrooms at least once every day. He added that the department will prepare a list of employees in government schools and within the education department who consume intoxicants, tobacco products or gutka, though he did not specify what action would follow.
