Jaipur: In a ruling that has elicited mixed reactions, Rajasthan High Court at Jodhpur has directed municipal corporations across the state to remove dogs and abandoned animals from streets and highways. For victims of dog bites and concerned parents, the court’s order signifies a much-needed measure to enhance safety in the streets. Animal lovers and welfare organisations, however, have voiced strong objections, arguing that the ruling could lead to inhumane and scientifically unsound relocation. Jaipur’s municipal corporations face significant challenges in executing the court’s directive. The city has only one operational dog shelter in Jaisinghpura Khor. Although Jaipur Municipal Corporation (Greater) claims a second shelter will be operational within the week, the logistics of capturing and housing hundreds of dogs remain daunting. The corporation has just one rescue van and two field workers assigned to this task.Concerns regarding the psychological impact of relocating dogs have also been raised by professionals. Dr Sunil Chawla, a contracted veterinarian for JMC-Greater, cautioned against the potential negative consequences of such removals on the dogs’ behaviour and mental health. Animal activist Narendra Chaudhary emphasised the importance of sustainable and humane solutions.
