Jaipur: Rajasthan high court Thursday directed the HC administration’s counsel to submit detailed reports prepared by district judges following visits to prisons across the state, after finding that only a few jails had been inspected.The court fixed the next hearing for one month later. The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice B S Sandhu, issued the directions during a suo motu case concerning prisoner welfare. Amicus Curiae Pratik Kasliwal told the bench that despite its August 18 order requiring all district judges to inspect local jails, reports from several districts were still pending. In response, the HC administration’s counsel submitted reports from districts where inspections had been completed. Noting the partial compliance, the court instructed the counsel to collect outstanding reports from all districts and file a consolidated report before the next hearing. The court had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the deplorable conditions in prisons and issued 45-point guidelines to the state govt to improve facilities, sanitation and inmate welfare. It also sought compliance reports on five key aspects of prison management and reforms and warned that secretaries of concerned departments would be summoned if reports were not submitted in time.
