Jaipur: The Pugal Solar Park in Bikaner is poised to become a unique project in India by integrating large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) with solar power generation. The park, currently under development, will have a generation capacity of 2,450 MW along with a 5,000 MWh BESS, allowing the storage of excess solar energy for use during non-sunny hours.President of India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), Debmalya Sen, said, “The solar-BESS plant being planned for tendering in Rajasthan will be one of the largest plants globally yet planned to date in a single location. Only a few announcements to date have been larger than this. This will be truly a game changer for India when operationalised.”The project, being implemented by the Rajasthan Solar Park Development Company Ltd (RSDCL), a fully owned subsidiary of the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Ltd (RRECL), will deploy power generated from the park for domestic consumption within Rajasthan, helping it inch closer to its goal of energy self-reliance, Ajitabh Sharma, principal secretary (Energy) told TOI. Spread across 4,780 hectares of govt land, the project has completed all land-related formalities, including mutation and title clearance, ensuring a smooth rollout for developers, Sharma said. “Developed under a plug-and-play model, the park includes power system infrastructure, roads, drainage, boundary fencing, and site accessibility, allowing investors to begin operations quickly,” he said. The Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (RVPN), in partnership with RSDCL, is establishing 765/400 kV grid substations and transmission lines to evacuate the power. Senior officials of the department noted that the project’s proximity to the green energy corridor will ensure seamless grid connectivity. They estimated that the park will generate over 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities and will help avoid more than 2 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. With full power offtake assured by the state govt and streamlined clearances through RSDCL, Pugal Solar Park is set to become a flagship model for large-scale renewable energy integration in India.
