Jaipur: Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Friday reviewed the progress of the proposed National Waterway-48 (NW-48) project, asking officials to fast-track a detailed feasibility study for the ambitious inland water transport plan.During the meeting, Sharma directed the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and IIT Madras to prepare a comprehensive report covering technical, financial and operational aspects, including projections of cargo traffic. Stressing the need to diversify logistics options, Sharma said, “Providing industries with efficient and affordable transport is a priority for the state govt. Developing waterways for cargo movement can significantly boost Rajasthan’s export potential and industrial growth.” The proposed NW-48 will link the Jawai-Luni river system with the Rann of Kutch, creating a route for cargo movement to the Arabian Sea. Once operational, the corridor is expected to offer a more economical alternative to road and rail transport, benefiting Rajasthan as well as neighbouring states. Officials said the project could bring tangible gains for the state’s industrial base, particularly in western and southern regions. Lower logistics costs, improved export competitiveness and reduced pressure on existing transport networks are among the key expected benefits. Sectors such as mining, cement, petrochemicals and agriculture are likely to benefit from cheaper bulk transportation. An expert associated with the project noted that the waterway could also attract fresh industrial investment, generate jobs in logistics and allied sectors, and improve access to ports, strengthening Rajasthan’s integration with global trade routes. Highlighting the long-term impact, Sharma said, “This national waterway can become a strong foundation for the state’s overall development. It will boost trade, bring down logistics costs and create new opportunities for businesses.” The review comes months after the Rajasthan govt signed an MoU with the IWAI on Oct 27, 2025, for the development of NW-48. During the meeting, Prof K Murali from IIT Madras presented an update on the preparation of the Detailed Project Report. Sharma also pointed to the wider regional impact, saying, “Industries and traders in Rajasthan and neighbouring states will benefit from smoother and more efficient cargo movement once this project is realised.”
