New transfer station aims to improve waste mgmt in the city

Jaipur: The Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Heritage (JMC-H) is developing a modern waste transfer station at Lal Dungri, Delhi Road at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore. The mechanical work of the station is complete while civil work is still in progress. It was initially scheduled for completion by June 30 but delays in CC flooring and tin shed installation have pushed the expected completion to the end of this year. The key feature of this transfer station is to overhaul the existing waste handling process. Until now, waste collected from wards was dumped together and later loaded into large trucks, covered with tarpaulins and transported to the Waste-to-Energy plant. This inefficient and unhygienic process will now be replaced.Mukesh Kumar Chaudhary, JMC-H executive engineer of the project division, stated, “At present, our hoppers are covered but when they dump waste at Lal Dungri, the area becomes unhygienic and emits foul odour. Moreover, when large trucks are loaded with waste, spillage occurs at various points increasing filth across the area.”He further added, “Therefore, we are developing this modern waste transfer station where a capsule-like container will be attached to the hopper. Once waste is collected, it will be compressed directly within the station. The facility has the capacity to compress up to 20 tonnes of waste at a time, making it easier to transport to the Waste-to-Energy plant.”Chaudhary expressed confidence, “We are striving to have the transfer station operational by the end of this year. This step will eliminate unnecessary stages in waste handling and help prevent the spread of unhygienic conditions in the city.”
