Jaipur: The Jaipur city police are investigating a case of fraud where an unidentified man impersonating a police officer allegedly extorted Rs 60,000 from a city resident by falsely claiming the victim’s son was arrested in a rape case. The incident came to light after the victim, a resident of Chandpole Bazaar, lodged a complaint at the Nahargarh police station.According to sub-inspector Shankar Lal, the fraud occurred last month when the victim received a phone call from a man claiming to be a police officer from the Sadar police station. The FIR was filed Wednesday. The caller alleged that the victim’s son was arrested along with three to four others in a rape case and that the son gave the victim’s contact number during interrogation. The fraudster demanded Rs 1.60 lakh to “settle” the matter and secure the boy’s release.Believing the story and acting under pressure, the victim transferred Rs 60,000 online to four mobile-linked numbers provided by the accused.Realising later that he was duped, the complainant approached the police with transaction details and phone numbers. An FIR was registered, and the cyber cell is examining call records and the money trail to trace the accused.
