Jaipur: Lawyers at two Benches of Rajasthan High Court (Jodhpur and Jaipur) as well as districts under the jurisdiction of these two Benches and subordinate courts in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and other parts of Rajasthan, abstained from work in protest against the possible establishment of a Bench in Bikaner. Judicial work was affected due to lesser attendance of the lawyers at different courts in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and other parts of the state. The protest was sparked by a recent statement from Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who hinted at progress regarding a HC Bench in Bikaner. Bar Association members claimed that Meghwal, while responding to a question about the Bench in Bikaner, mentioned that Chief Justice of India BR Gavai is coming to Bikaner in Sept. The minister said that if the CJI is coming, then there must be some progress, the Bar members claimed. A video of this statement has since gone viral on social media, fuelling speculation among the legal community. Following this, the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association at Jaipur, Jodhpur Bar Association, Bar Association of District Courts, and other advocate groups convened an emergency meeting Thursday. In the meeting, it was unanimously decided to abstain from judicial work for a day in protest. “We condemn the confusion being created for the members at large of the bar regarding the constitution of a bench in Bikaner. Thus, all the members of the bar, senior advocates, and office bearers of bar associations have unanimously decided to abstain from work on Friday,” said the office bearers of bar associations of the high court in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and others from subordinate courts.
