Jaipur: Residents of Lal Kothi have long been troubled by the illegal vegetable market that blocks roads, disrupts traffic, and creates constant waste and congestion in the area. Despite repeated complaints, no department has been able to find a permanent solution. In its latest attempt to ease the situation, Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) removed the open garbage depot in the market area and constructed a pavement at a cost of Rs 6 lakh. Officials claimed this would help streamline traffic and parking of vehicles near the Laxmi Mandir underpass. This is not the first time taxpayers’ money has been spent on improving traffic in the area. In 2023, Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) built the underpass at a cost of Rs 85 crore. Within a month of its inauguration, the illegal vegetable market returned to the same spot, and the traffic mess returned to what it was. Now, after JMC’s expenditure of Rs 6 lakh, residents say the problem of the illegal vegetable market remains unsolved. JMC’s project implementation unit official, Jeetmal Nagar, who is supervising the project, said, “Our objective is to improve parking and traffic movement in Lal Kothi, which has been disrupted by the illegal vegetable market. We are trying to shift the vendors elsewhere.”When asked whether the corporation has a definite plan to remove the market, he admitted, “At the moment, we don’t know how they will be removed, but officials concerned will certainly take action.”
