Jaipur: A single judge bench of Rajasthan high court Tuesday issued notices to and sought a reply from the state govt for not conducting student union elections at the University of Rajasthan. The petitioner, Jai Rao, a student of sociology at the varsity, filed a petition saying the govt has not conducted student union elections since 2023.“Under the Lingdoh Committee recommendations, elections should be conducted within 6-8 weeks of the start of the academic session. It is the fundamental right of students to elect student representatives through student union elections. The govt is violating that too,” said Shantanu Pareek, counsel for petitioner. The petitioner also told the court of Justice Anoop Dhand that the state govt cited the implementation of the National Education Policy to not hold elections in the 2023-24 session. Justice Dhand issued notices to the principal secretary of the department of higher education and vice chancellor, University of Rajasthan and posted the matter for next hearing on Aug 1.
