Jaipur: Two families are embroiled in a suspected baby swap case at Udaipur’s MB Hospital, with both claiming a newborn boy as their own. DNA samples from the parents of the two babies, a boy and a girl born on Oct 21, were sent Thursday to the forensic science laboratory in Jaipur to resolve the dispute. The dispute arises from two deliveries made 43 minutes apart in the same operation theatre on Oct 21, where Anita Rawat, a resident of Mira Nagar, Udaipur, and Rameshwari Soni, a resident of Chittorgarh, gave birth to a boy and a girl. One of the families alleged that the hospital handed over the baby boy to them and, after one hour, took the baby boy back, claiming they had mistakenly handed over the wrong infant to them. “We protested this. We suspect something wrong in this. We filed an FIR with Hathi Pole police station. With the help of the police, the forensic experts have taken our samples—husband and wife (parents of the baby) of both babies,” said Sunil Rawat, Anita’s husband. On Wednesday, the police kept the babies under the supervision of the hospital in the NICU, where the infants were fed from the mother’s milk bank. However, the Rawat family decided to accept the baby girl until the DNA report arrives. “We do not want to deprive the babies of mother’s milk. So, we decided to feed the baby girl. The DNA report will come in 15 days. Until then, we will stay here with the baby girl in the hospital ward,” Rawat said.He further added that if the DNA report shows that Anita actually delivered the baby boy, it will be difficult for them since they have started to feed the baby girl. When contacted, the MB Hospital administration could not offer clarity on the situation and said the DNA results will ascertain the identity of the actual parents.
