Jaipur: Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot criticised the Centre over reported closure of Dr BR Ambedkar chair at Rajasthan University, calling it “unfortunate” and a reflection of negligence towards social justice and the legacy of the Constitution’s architect. In a post on X Saturday, Gehlot said it was “extremely unfortunate” that the chair, named after Bharat Ratna Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, was shut down while the university administration appeared unaware of the development. He wrote that such neglect in an institution of learning was “inexcusable”. “The closure of a chair established in the name of Baba Saheb inside a temple of education, and the administration being unaware of it, is deeply regrettable. This shows indifference towards social justice and disrespect for great leaders. The Centre and the state govt must take immediate cognisance of the matter.”According to sources, the Ambedkar chair reportedly did not receive funding for nearly two years because the university did not submit proposals required to continue financial support. As a result, academic and research activities under the chair gradually came to a halt. The chair was originally set up to promote teaching, research and dialogue on Ambedkar’s ideas, particularly related to social justice, constitutional values and ensuring the benefits of development reach the “last person” in society.
