Jaisalmer: Criminals broke into a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM booth, uprooted the machine and fled in a Bolero vehicle in Jaisalmer Saturday.The ATM, which was situated at Nehrai village under Mohangarh police station area in Jaisalmer, contained Rs 10-11 lakh. When local residents saw the broken doors of the ATM booth Sunday morning and found the machine missing from inside, panic spread in the area. Mohangarh police was informed.Nachna deputy superintendent of police Gajendra Singh said that five to six masked criminals uprooted an ATM containing Rs 10-11 lakh at Nehrai village. Five to six criminals in a Bolero vehicle reached the State ATM. First, one masked criminal entered the ATM booth. The criminal looked around and, while avoiding showing his face to the CCTV, sprayed the camera. After this, they tied it to the Bolero and took away the ATM. The entire initial incident was captured on CCTV, he said. He said that the criminals first broke the ATM booth gates. After this, they tied the ATM machine with strong ropes or chains to the Bolero vehicle. The entire machine was uprooted with force, and they fled with it.The exact assessment of cash present in the ATM is being done by the bank, but it is estimated to be between Rs 10-11 lakh. Police said blockades have been set up in surrounding areas to search for the thieves, and CCTV footage is being examined. Police are trying to identify this organised gang. Meanwhile, this theft incident has raised major questions about the security arrangements of banks and ATMs in rural areas. There was no guard from the bank’s side at the ATM.
