Jaipur: Head constable Rampal (50) of Rajasthan Police developed a rare bilateral hernia after being injured by a truck while on duty in Raja Park on Nov 30, 2025. Doctors said hernia following trauma is uncommon, making the case unusual. He was treated at the SMS Hospital using advanced robotic surgery on Feb 28. The operation lasted about two hours and was performed through three small incisions—three 8 mm ports—minimising surgical trauma. He was discharged on March 3. Hospital sources linked the hernia to the injuries he sustained in the road accident. Officials said the procedure is a notable achievement for the govt hospital, which has crossed 300 robotic surgeries since the system was installed in the general surgery dept. SMS Hospital superintendent Dr Mrinal Joshi said this is a major milestone and that no other govt hospital in Rajasthan has performed as many robotic procedures so far. He added that robotic surgery benefits patients through reduced blood loss and faster recovery.Doctors at SMS highlighted that robotic-assisted surgery offers advantages over conventional laparoscopy. The robotic system provides a clearer, more stable view of organs and allows the instrument arms to rotate 360 degrees, helping surgeons access areas that were previously difficult to reach with standard laparoscopic tools.SMS Medical College procured two robotic systems three years ago—one for general surgery and one for urology—at a cost of Rs 25 crore each.
