Jaipur: Police, Wednesday night, arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the alleged rape of an 83-year-old woman in a village under Manoharpur police station limits in Jaipur (Rural). The arrest was made two days after the crime was reported.The accused has been identified as Lokesh Jawa alias Loku, a resident of Bishangarh. Officials said the survivor’s son lodged an FIR Monday evening, stating that his mother had stepped out to use a washroom near their house when an unknown man, with his face covered, allegedly dragged her to a deserted spot and raped her before fleeing.A case was initially registered against unknown persons, following which multiple police teams were formed to trace the attacker. On Thursday, police said the accused was working as a cleaner in the area, and this aspect is being examined as part of the investigation.Sources said the elderly woman was rushed to a hospital soon after the assault, where she was given primary medical treatment. Her statement was recorded, and medical examination and related procedures were carried out as per protocol.Police said the crime occurred near a secluded patch close to the victim’s residence, raising concerns about safety in poorly lit and isolated areas even within inhabited localities.Senior officers said further questioning of the accused is underway to ascertain whether he was involved in any previous offences.The incident has once again brought focus on women’s safety in Jaipur. The National Annual Report & Index on Women’s Safety (NARI) 2025, which surveyed 31 major cities, ranked Jaipur among the lower performers, with 45% of women citing deserted places as the main reason for feeling unsafe, highlighting persistent gaps in safety measures and enforcement.
