Jaipur: Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) stepped up its preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025 by reviving camera-based surveillance to penalise people who dump garbage in public places. Over the past three days, JMC collected nearly Rs 3 lakh in fines, signalling a tougher approach towards maintaining cleanliness across the city. The system is not new. In Oct last year, JMC launched a similar drive using CCTV cameras to impose fines on violators. However, monitoring gradually weakened, and the initiative lost momentum. With the national cleanliness survey approaching, the corporation decided to strictly enforce the system once again.JMC Commissioner Gaurav Saini said, “Earlier, we did not have a proper team focused solely on camera surveillance. But with the aim of securing a place among the top 3 cities in Swachh Survekshan, we are setting up a special team at the command and control centre that will exclusively track people who litter in the open,” he said.Saini added the JMC currently has around 500 cameras across part-I and II areas. “We will be installing more cameras in the coming days. In addition, we also obtained permission from DOIT to use their cameras for stricter monitoring,” he said.Open garbage dumping remains one of the biggest challenges for Jaipur’s cleanliness ranking. Highlighting this, Saini said, “We often see that even when garbage hoppers come regularly, people throw waste outside their homes after the vehicle passes. We appeal to residents to dispose of their waste only when the garbage van arrives and not dump it in the open.”
