Jaipur: The controversy over an alleged calf beheading in Ashokpura intensified after Shyam Nagar police Friday said a medical report found the recovered bovine head to be a dummy.Shyam Nagar SHO Dalbeer Singh told TOI, “According to the medical report, the recovered head is not real but a dummy, as no bones were found in it. This issue is being used to incite emotions.” Former minister and Congressman Pratap Singh Khachariyawas challenged the police claim and demanded the medical report be made public, alleging the investigation was being influenced to protect the accused. He also questioned the medical examination, saying, “If false medical reports are prepared, the doctors concerned will be taken to court.” The controversy erupted on Feb 9 when children playing in Lane No 3 of Ashokpura under Shyam Nagar police station area allegedly spotted a calf’s head hanging near a plot owned by accused Satyanarayan Sharma. Residents informed police, who began an inquiry. In a press statement issued the same day, DCP (South) Rajrishi Raj said the accused told police a calf in his cattle shed died naturally and its body was sent to Hingoniya Gaushala in a Jaipur Municipal Corporation vehicle. The police further stated that the accused claimed he later brought the calf’s head from the gaushala and hung it in front of the cow as it was distressed by her calf’s absence and stopped giving milk. The trust running Hingoniya Gaushala later denied that any dead calf was brought to the shelter by JMC for burial, contradicting the initial account of the accused mentioned in the police’s press statement. On Friday, an old video clip circulated on social media purportedly showed the accused saying he paid Rs 500 to get the dead calf’s head brought back from Hingoniya. Citing the clip, Khachariyawas alleged the state govt was trying to shield the accused for political reasons. The accused’s brother, former councillor Harish Kumar Sharma, rejected the allegations and said only part of the viral video was being circulated. He said Rs 500 was paid to have the carcass removed, but claimed his brother was not in Jaipur when the calf died and had asked an acquaintance to handle the matter after receiving a phone call. He further claimed that a member of the Harijan community was asked to make a fake calf’s head when the cow stopped giving milk the next day, and that the situation escalated after it was hung on Feb 9 morning. He denied political links and alleged Khachariyawas’s supporters tried to force a statement from his brother. BJP MLA from Civil Lines Gopal Sharma, in whose constituency the controversy has been going on, declined to comment Friday, saying he would speak in detail later.
