Jaipur: If you lose your bike anywhere in the city, it might be wise to lower your expectations about when the paperwork by police will follow.In the first two days of Jan, 48 FIRs were registered for vehicle thefts in the city, even though most of the thefts took place in mid to late Dec. These figures point to delayed paperwork on part of police rather than a spate in crime. Sources say the clustering of FIRs in the first two days of Jan may not be coincidental; with police stations closing annual registers, FIRs appear to have been held back to avoid swelling year-end pendency.For residents, however, the numbers tell a more dispiriting story. Dec’s thefts became visible on paper only after New Year’s celebrations were over, by which time many victims already gave up hope of recovery. In one case, a scooter stolen in mid Dec saw its FIR registered only on Dec 30.A police station-wise scan places Jawahar Circle as one of the major hotspots, followed by Pratap Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Shivdaspura, Narayan Vihar, Mansarovar, etc. Along with large public spaces and residential colonies, the complaints repeatedly mention places where people park briefly and return to find their vehicle stolen.For now, the lesson for two-wheeler owners is simple: guard your bike carefully. As per a former member of the city’s special squad that tracks vehicle snatchers, it is important to add a disc lock on the front or rear brake disc to stop wheel rotation, as thieves are always on the clock. They can break away the ignition lock easily, but cutting a disc lock takes time, which the thieves do not have.“Using a heavy chain or a U-lock in dimly lit areas where vehicle thefts are rampant is also important, especially if you know that the bike will be parked for a long time,” said an officer.
