Bhilwara: Bhilwara police have secured refunds totalling more than Rs 2.1 crore in various cyber fraud cases between Jan 1 and Oct 31 this year.Cyber police station in-charge Uday Singh Chundawat said this puts Bhilwara in first position across the state in terms of successful recovery of proceeds from online fraud. The recoveries are based on 12 FIRs and 169 separate complaints filed in the first ten months of this year. The most notable among these cases involves the targeting of more than 150 members of a local WhatsApp women’s group. The group was hacked on Oct 16 after some members downloaded a fraudulent PDF wedding invitation link, police said. The download compromised the WhatsApp accounts of individual members, disabling all functions except calling.Fortunately, members alerted one another and froze their bank accounts to prevent unauthorised withdrawals. In another case, a complainant who downloaded a similar wedding invitation link on WhatsApp later found her PhonePe account hacked and PIN number changed. Fortunately, bank security systems prevented money from being fraudulently debited from her account.Bhilwara police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant against cyber fraud and not download suspect documents or click on suspect links on phones or computers.
