Jaisalmer: In a major push toward modern warfare and self-reliance, the Indian Army has begun training soldiers in advanced drone operations through a special ‘Drone Workshop’ set up by the Battle Axe Division during Exercise Trishul under the Southern Command near the India-Pakistan border in Jaisalmer. The workshop focuses on drone creation, repair, and operational expertise — including First Person View (FPV) piloting, munition dropping, and surveillance — under the Army’s vision that ‘Every Soldier Will Have the Vision of an Eagle’. The initiative marks the Army’s first large-scale use of drones in the Trishul exercise, where the unmanned systems dropped bombs and destroyed mock enemy positions over two days, demonstrating their battlefield potential. The programme aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to build indigenous combat capabilities. Southern Command has developed a complete in-house system to design and mass-produce Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), cutting dependence on foreign suppliers. Drawing on the technical expertise of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and partnerships with India’s MSMEs, the Command has set up Drone Hubs to develop advanced systems for surveillance, precision strikes, and electronic warfare. The drones tested during Trishul displayed high endurance, accuracy, and adaptability in desert conditions, underscoring their operational value. Southern Command’s effort merges innovation, technology, and tactical readiness — shaping a tech-enabled, future-ready Army capable of facing modern battlefield challenges with homegrown solutions.
