Jaisalmer: In a late-night robbery in Barmer district, armed criminals held a medical trader’s family hostage, taped their mouths, and fled with valuables worth around Rs 1 crore, including jewellery and cash. The incident occurred around 2am Thursday in the main market of the Gadra Road police station area.The assailants, armed with pistols and iron rods, tied up medical trader Uttamchand Bhootra (70), his wife Kamla Devi (72), and daughter Maya (30), and threatened to kill Maya’s 10-month-old son. They stole about 35 tolas of gold, 40kg of silver, and Rs 5 lakh in cash before escaping. Uttamchand, who runs a medical store, said his daughter Maya had come to visit three days earlier. On the night of the incident, masked robbers entered the house through the roof. They gagged and bound the family members and assaulted Uttamchand. Maya recalled that the robbers forced them to sit together with their hands and feet tied. When her infant son started crying, the robbers threatened to kill him if anyone raised an alarm. “They asked where the jewellery was kept and took everything,” Maya said, adding that her father was beaten and she was pushed to the ground during the chaos. One robber’s mask reportedly slipped, and he identified himself as Manu Vishnoi. The ordeal lasted until around 3am, after which the criminals fled. Maya then managed to use a hidden phone to call a relative, Ramesh Maheshwari, who informed others. Barmer SP Narendra Singh Meena confirmed that four robbers were involved. “Teams have been formed to track the suspects. We are collecting evidence from the spot and scanning CCTV footage,” he said. However, the victim’s relatives alleged that the local station officer did not immediately alert senior officials, which delayed action. “If police had responded quickly, the robbers might have been caught,” said Prakash Bhootra, a family member. The incident has shocked the area, with residents expressing fear over the scale and brazenness of the crime. The family plans to meet the SP to demand stronger police action.
