Jaipur: A sharp rise in the illegal manufacture of synthetic drugs has prompted the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) to issue a public advisory, warning that clandestine laboratories producing substances such as mephedrone (MD) may be operating unnoticed in residential pockets and semi-industrial zones across the state. Inspector general of ANTF Vikas Kumar said these covert units are designed to blend into everyday surroundings, often escaping suspicion until significant damage is done. “Early detection by local communities can be decisive. These operations rely on anonymity, and that is where public awareness becomes critical,” he said. The advisory outlines a series of physical indicators that residents should watch for, including persistent chemical odours, blacked-out or permanently covered windows, unusually high ventilation setups and erratic electricity usage such as frequent power trips or unexplained spikes in consumption. The ANTF also pointed to chemical and environmental warning signs. Storage of industrial-grade precursor chemicals, unusual waste disposal patterns and visible environmental damage — such as dead vegetation or barren patches of soil near drainage outlets — may signal the presence of illicit production. In some cases, there can also be unexplained contamination or foul-smelling discharge in nearby areas. Behavioural patterns, officials said, can be equally telling. Restricted or tightly controlled access to premises, the presence of surveillance equipment and a steady stream of visitors at odd hours are common traits. Individuals entering or exiting such locations may frequently use gloves, masks or other protective gear. Residents in the vicinity may also experience unexplained symptoms such as eye irritation, headaches or breathing discomfort. Operational indicators further strengthen suspicion. Authorities noted irregular delivery schedules, the use of unregistered or out-of-state vehicles and a preference for cash transactions as common practices linked to these networks. “Such patterns, when observed consistently, should not be ignored,” Kumar said, adding that the ANTF has urged citizens to report any such suspicious activity to the nearest police station without delay. He said that the ANTF is widely sharing these warnings with the public and also with the police authorities.
