Amid public outrage, police begin probe into obscene online dating app

Jaisalmer: Taking cognisance of widespread public outrage, the police have begun an investigation into an online dating app running ads on social media and offering girls “ready for dating” at the world-famous tourist destination for just Rs 3.Police said the ads show indecent acts by men and women wearing local attire and feature backgrounds resembling the desert landscape here. Cyber experts claim the images are AI-generated deepfakes, while indignant members of civil society say the entire episode is an attempt to tarnish Jaisalmer’s culture and global reputation. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shivhare said investigators have written to Google to try to determine where the app is registered and who is handling it. He also assured strict action against anyone found responsible for the ads. Residents across age-groups, from youths to the elderly, have expressed anger over the ads and demanded their removal from all social media platforms, besides action against those behind them under applicable provisions of the law.The ads have also revived memories of an earlier case involving vulgarity in the name of traditional Kalbeliya dances at several resorts in Sam and Khuhdi. The Kalbeliya community had then alleged that men were made to wear their traditional dress and indulge in obscenity, and the practice was stopped after the local community expressed grave displeasure.
