Ajmer: Relatives of the four victims, who died in Thursday’s fire at a hotel in the city’s congested Diggi Bazaar, have alleged that the establishment lacked fire safety measures, leading to the tragedy. They demanded action against the hotel owner, with one family lodging a complaint at the Clock Tower police station.
A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team and police visited the hotel Friday to collect evidence to determine the cause of the fire.
The bodies were handed over to relatives who arrived from Amreli in Gujarat and Delhi. “There were no fire safety arrangements, and this negligence cost us our family,” said Moin Mohammad, a relative of Alfez Mohammad, who perished along with his wife Shabnam and their four-year-old son Arman.
The fourth victim was Mohammad Jaid from Delhi. Rehana, the wife of deceased Mohammad Jaid, claimed her husband died of suffocation as no one came to his aid. “Now my three children are orphaned without their father,” said Rehana, when she came to take her husband’s body.
Abid, a relative of another Rehana aged six years injured in the blaze, filed a police complaint alleging negligence. “This incident put my niece’s life in danger,” said Abid, who came from Delhi. Baby Rehana remains under medical observation, while firefighter Krishna was discharged after treatment.
Local residents expressed anger at Ajmer Municipal Corporation (AMC) for ignoring safety violations at commercial establishments. “Many hotels here operate flouting rules,” a resident said.
Police said it was investigating the incident. “We are awaiting the FSL report to conclude the cause of the fire,” an officer stated.
The blaze broke out Thursday morning in the five-storey hotel Naaz, purportedly due to short-circuit in an air-conditioner.
